Bagels & Bikes

Posted on: 3rd December 2011

Georgetown Bagelry is proud to be among the sponsors of Artemis Racing, a women’s competitive and recreational cycling club of the Greater Washington, DC area. You may have even seen our logo on their jerseys. We are happy to help the team out as much as we can, either by cheering them on at races or donating bagels to help them stayed fueled.

This year the Artemis Racing team demonstrated their talent by medaling at national and local events, including the Masters Track Nationals,  Women’s Sportif Cup Series, and the Independence Day Duathlon. Congratulations on a great year of racing! We are proud to be a sponsor and we look forward to another year!

Bagel Love

Posted on: 28th November 2011

We are always so grateful for the wonderful reviews we receive from our customers. Over the weekend we received a very nice note from Aaron M. He wrote:

I LOVE Georgetown Bagelry.  I go to college in NOLA but GB is always one of my first stops when I get back in town.  It’s always the same staff who remembers who I am and is so, so friendly!  YOU are the poster model for small business owners!

We love you, too, Aaron! Thanks for your kind words — hopefully you can bring back some bagels to share with your friends in NOLA!

Online Ordering: Convenience & Limitations

Posted on: 4th November 2011

Last year, Georgetown Bagelry added online ordering to its website. Since then, many of you have ordered your bagels online. Whether it’s to avoid the lines or to plan ahead, online ordering is a great benefit to our customers. To make it easier for you to plan ahead for big orders, we’ve added online catering to our website this summer. To encourage customers to take advantage of these convenient ordering options, we’d like to provide incentives, like discount codes you can use for online orders.

At present, our online ordering system isn’t able to apply coupon codes in real-time. The system is designed for customers to pay for online orders at the store. Georgetown Bagelry realizes that paying at the store for online orders isn’t efficient and doesn’t alleviate lines, which is why we require all customers to pay before they pick up the order placed online.

In order to provide discounts for online orders, customers will need to provide the appropriate coupon code upon paying online and the discount will be applied retroactively – we will refund you the difference. We understand that this isn’t ideal.

Though Georgetown Bagelry is a small bagel shop, our ambitions are big! It is often difficult for small businesses like us to find vendors who can fit our needs and our budgets. Smaller vendors may not offer the functionality that larger companies expect but are affordable and scalable, while larger vendors are too expensive for individual shops to afford but offer the services we need. As we grow, so do those who partner with us. But it takes time.

We appreciate your patience and we are dedicated to providing you with an extraordinary bagel experience. Our bagels are made with hands and heart – getting business processes to following the same model isn’t as easy, but we’re working on it!

Thank You!

Posted on: 24th September 2011

Dear Mary,

Once again I am sending a gigantic thank you for your your support of the Lymphoma Research Foundation and their incredible work. The 5th Annual Bike Ride was yesterday – another beautiful day in the rolling hills of rural Maryland. And, as in past years, I am so proud to be a part of such a wonderful event. The camaraderie and support that we all feel is beyond description, as are the end results … the growing number of riders (240 this year, many of whom are survivors like me), more volunteers than one can count (literally one or more on every corner of the ride), and an unbelievable bottom line (at least $450,000 expected)!!!!! That means that in just 5 years, the supporters of this event have contributed nearly $2,000,000!!!

I want you to know just how very much your donations are appreciated by me, Gary, and all the others whose lives are impacted by lymphoma. Please know how much I am I grateful for your friendship, support and generosity.

Thank you, thank you, thank you,
Lisa

PS – I dropped a couple of t-shirts off at the store when I picked up the bagels.

Georgetown Bagelry Receives National Certification as a Women’s Business Enterprise

Posted on: 6th September 2011

Georgetown Baglery, well-known for its artisan bagels for the Washington DC Metropolitan region, received national certification as a Women’s Business Enterprise by the Women Presidents’ Educational Organization (WPEO), a regional certifying partner of the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC).

WBENC’s national standard of certification implemented by the WPEO is a meticulous process including an in-depth review of the business and site inspection. A Response to a Customer’s Concern

Posted on: 14th August 2011

Q: I was in Georgetown Bagelry today and was unable to buy a fountain soda. What gives?

A: I apologize for the inconvenience. While I would love to have fountain soda in the bagel shop,  it was a tough decision and one I couldn’t put off any longer. I was hoping to have a rush of capital to totally renovate, but since the economy is in the state it is, I have needed to make some smaller changes quickly.

I have several employees that have worked here for 25+ years. I would like them to remain in their jobs. Commodities have gone up, rent, utilities…virtually the price of everything has gone up…I’ve done a cost analysis of everything…

Top priority is space for a freezer. (Freezer streamlines our production & since I sold our G’town location we haven’t had one.) The soda equipment used a huge space in the back of the store where our new freezer will be placed. We sell a lot of diet coke and coke. The other sodas move disgustingly slow from a food service sanitation point of view.

I’m totally convinced from a “health” perspective that the aluminum soda’s give our client’s a better soda experience. Yes, it costs more. Hopefully, it won’t cost more for long because Coke is giving us some terrific rates. Coca Cola failed to deliver to us this week because I placed the order late and we’re on a funky rhythm due to a lot of stuff you probably do not want to hear about :)

I hear you. Please bear w/me through this transition.  (Ask for ice and a cup and we’re working on the pricing!) This will be a win/win for everybody.

I can’t with a clear conscience sell fountain sodas simply for a buck. I prefer to see fresh brewed iced tea/coffee and fresh squeezed lemonade that’s simply better all the way around.

There will be price shifts, but right now, I need to make sure the bills are paid and we move forward w/artisan baker’s and bagels.

I welcome all comments and suggestions, so please do hesistate to contact me.

Best,

Mary
