Power Outages, Hot Water Heaters, and Potato Chips
Posted on: 7th May 2010
It’s another great day at Georgetown Bagelry. I decided to sleep in and it seems like every time I decide to stay horizontal something goes haywire at the shop. Our power went off in the middle of the morning rush. This is the second time this week. The first time was Wednesday after the lunch rush which was Badu’s day off. I guess the reason this is interesting to me is because I’m sure I’m one of the few women on the east coast who understands power panels, ovens, and well, bagels…and for me, it adds to the intrigue and fun of being in the business. Plus, I must know just about every electrician in the DC metropolitan area.
New Age Electric’s service has been awesome. We finally figured out that the filaments from the hot water heater are going bad (see photo) and tripping the entire circuit panel. Wednesday, I nearly blew my arm off trying to reset it. No matter how many times you’ve worked with these electrical panels, it’s wise to take every precaution you can think of! This is a big deal because the hot water heater is located above the men’s bathroom in the back of the shop. It is not easy to get to.
Our incredible staff did not miss a beat. They continued to take customer orders, make their breakfasts, and not worry weather payment was made or not. The digital dining, registers, bit the dust with the power so it was back to old school pencil and paper calculating. We all “get” how important it is to have a wholesome, pleasant bagel breakfast. Power or no power:) Our artisan bagels are made with true hands, head, and heart. I can see the difference, and I guarantee you can taste the difference.
On another note, I received a great suggestion from Eric Myhre, one of regular customers, to carry potato chips that are not boiled in peanut oil! It’s a great idea and frankly we haven’t been focused on chips at all. We love bagel chips, but they do not sell in the shop like you would imagine. They sit and go stale. I contacted the owners of Deep River Potato Chips and they’re putting us in touch with their local distributor. These chips are delicious and made with olive oil and corn oil. There are many people allergic to nuts. We do not use them in anything we make. I really appreciate Eric’s suggestion. Thank you Eric. This is what makes the bagel shop great.
